V červnu 1683 propukl v domažlické Hradské ulici požár, který se rozšířil na pravou stranu náměstí a blížil se k radničnímu domu. Tehdejší děkan P. Jiří Mauricius Borovský vyšel s Nejsvětější Svátostí z kostela a domažličtí rychtáři mu odpřisáhli, že zbudují kostel na Veselé hoře, pokud se oheň dále nerozšíří. Oheň se již dále nešířil, ale rychtáři na svůj slib zapomněli. Této myšlenky se tedy ujala zbožná a zámožná domažlická měšťanka, Zuzana Veselá. Kostel byl tedy roku 1695 slavnostně vysvěcen svatému Vavřincovi, který měl od města odvrátit požáry.
