Původní osada vznikla v první polovině 16.století při říčce Řezná na důležité obchodní stezce z Čech do Bavorska, při nalezištích železné rudy - odtud také pochází název města. Roku 1849 dostala osada statut městyse a nový majitel Kníže Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen rozšířil v roce 1852 území na více než 6.000 ha. Koncem 19.století nabylo město na významu vybudováním železniční tratě z Plzně do Bavorska s nejdelším tunelem v tehdejším Rakousko – Uhersku. Od konce 19. století dochází k rozvoji cestovního ruchu.
