Santorini island must be one of the most photogenic places on earth with towns built along the top of the crater rim that look down into a flooded caldera. Coming by boat, watch out for the abandoned loading piers of the old Fira pumice quarry as you come into the new port of Athinios. From here, a narrow winding road scales the sheer rock face to the crater rim. The main town is Fira with a cable car, stairway and donkeys to connect to the old port of Skala. The walk along the rim from Fira to Oia has spectacular views of cliffs, Nea Kameni volcanic island, Skaros Rock with remnants of a former Christian castle. The walk passes Imerovigli a traditional village with its Prophet Elias chapel and many picture perfect church domes & bell towers against the vivid blue Mediterranean sky. Oia is at the northern tip of Santorini Island with Amoudi Bay, Armeni Harbour & St Nicholas castle. If you look carefully, you will still find signs of the devastating 1956 earthquake and the old cave houses. We stayed inland at Megalochori, a 17th century village with winding cobbled streets. From here we visited the Akrotiri ruins, a Minoan Bronze Age settlement that was destroyed & buried in volcanic ash around 1627 BC.
