The sanctuary of Olympia is the site of the first Olympic Games in honour of Zeus, held every four years from 8thc.BC - 4thc.AD. Our photos of the sanctuary show the Gymnasium, Sacred Hill, Prytaneion, Thermae, Palaestra, Phillippeon, Temple of Hera, Temple of Zeus, Nymphaeum, Stadium, Villa of Nero, Bouleuterian, Leonidaion, Workshop of Pheidias. The modern town of Olympia has a Winged Victory of Nike statue, it's Museum of the History of the Olympic Games has pottery, bronze statues of events such as running, wrestling, boxing, discus, javelin etc. The Archaeological museum has artifacts found during the sanctuary excavations including many sculptures and bronze items. Pediment sculptures from the Temple of Zeus, statue of Hermes of Praxiteles & illustration of the Chryselepnantine statue of Zeus from the Temple of Zeus(430 BC) - one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
