Mount Bromo is in the Bromo-Tengger- Semeru National Park, East Java. Mt Bromo is an active volcano & is one of the 3 mountains within the calderera of a much larger ancient Tengger volcano. We drove up a narrow mist enshrouded road to the Lava View Lodge which overlooks Mt Bromo. Like most visitors who climb Mt Bromo, we arrived by jeep after going to Mt Penanjakan to watch the sunrise over the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. Our jeep parked at the base of Mt Bromo in a "sand sea" near the Poten Hindu Temple. From here, its a half hour walk to the top of Mt Bromo. On the walk up, you can buy offerings to throw into the steaming crater. Kalibaru is a small hill town in the foothills of Gunung Raung, East Java. We stayed at Margo Utomo, an old Dutch colonial Inn which kept farm animals and a couple of pet fruit bats. We visited the Ibu Harnik Orphanage, which is set in spice gardens & rice fields.
