Antananarivo, commonly known as Tana, is the capital and largest city of Madagascar. The name means 'City of the Thousands' a reference to the thousand warriors of King Andrianjaka, who established Tana as the capital city of the Merina tribe. The city was chosen because of its situation - on high ground and surrounded by marsh making it easy to defend. The city is a fascinating place to explore, with interesting architecture and winding cobblestone streets. On the highest hill dominating all the view points is the Queen's palace or Rova. We took a scenic drive from Tana to visit Ambohimanga, the site of the first capital city of Madagascar. It is built on top of one of the 12 sacred hills around Tana and it's name means Blue or Beautiful Hill.
