Isalo National Park was founded in 1962 and located in the dry south region of Madagascar near Ranohira. It is an area of sandstone massif rising up from the flat surrounding grasslands. The sandstone has been wildly eroded by wind and rain into bizarre rock formations and deep gorges. We hiked in the park photographing the dramatic scenary and the wide variety of wild life adapted to the arid conditions. The weather was very hot so the natural water holes in the gorges were most welcoming. The area is sacred to the local Bara tribe who use caves in the cliffs as burial sites.
