The small town of Nyaungshwe is the gateway to Inle Lake. It is connected to the lake by canal. The town has a marina with long boats to take visitors to the lake. Inle Lake is a very large scenic freshwater lake surrounded by the Shan Hills. After wandering around the town and visiting the market, monasteries and nunneries we spent a few days visiting the lake. The Intha fishermen of Inle Lake are famous for their conical fishing traps and their unique way of leg-rowing. We visited Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, the most famous and religious site on the lake. The temple was founded over 800 years ago and has five sacred buddha statues which glimmer with many layers of gold leaf
