On western bank of Inle Lake a small creek meanders to the ancient village of Indein. A covered walkway leads up Indein Hill to Shwe Indein Pagoda with many stupas and a great view. Below the hill are clusters of ancient brick stupas mostly in ruins and overgrown by the jungle, very atmospheric. Around the lake are craft villages where the local people weave using lotus thread, and you can watch the local silversmiths and blacksmiths at work. The lake has many reed lined marshes and canals that zigzag off through villages of wooden houses on stilts and floating gardens where the local people grow all their crops.
