Mount Popa is an extinct volcano south east of Bagan. We climbed the 777 steps up Taung Kalat a spectacular volcanic plug with a monastery at the summit. Mount Popa is the abode of Burma's most powerful Nats (spirits). The Mahagiri Shrine in the pilgrim village has a pantheon of 37 Nats. In the Mount Popa area we visited a local market, a village, a laquerware factory and toddy making.
