The drive from Kalaw to Pindaya caves cuts through one of the most densly farmed areas of Myanmar, a good opportunity to see rural life in the Shan State. Local industry included the making of paper and umbrellas. Pindaya's Shwe Oo Min pagoda is set on a limestone ridge above Pone Taloke Lake. The natural caves and tunnels have an amazing 8,700 buddha statues placed by pilgrims from all over the world. Close to Nyaungshwe we visited the beautiful old teak monastery of Shwe Yaunghwe Kyaung.
