We visited Grytviken on South Georgia, an abandoned the whaling station made famous by Shackleton's reunion with civilisation after losing his ship, the Endurance, to Antarctic pack ice in 1915. We gave a toast to Shackleton at his grave site in a small cemetery overlooking the bay. The rusting remains of the old station station are now guarded by many seals. We visited the museum and saw the original J. Caird, the boat that Shackleton sailed from Antarctica to South Georgia and took part in a service dedicated to the memory of Shackleton in the restored Norwegian church. The British Antarctic Research Station is out on king Edward Point.
