Fortuna Bay, on the north coast of South Georgia was the beach that Shackleton, Worsely and Crean crossed en route to their final rescue at Stromness. The beach was clear enough to land in amongst a small number of young male fur seals. Beyond the narrow beach a wonderful scene opened up for us – tens of thousands of king penguins and fluffy brown chicks in a tranquil river valley. There was a beautiful blue three horned ice berg in the bay.
