Travelling 1,253 kilometres WSW of South Georgia we reached Elephant Island in the South Shetlands, named for it’s shape and for the elephant seals seen here. The island is famous as the desolate refuge of Ernest Shackleton and his crew in 1916. Following the loss of their ship Endurance in the Weddell Sea, the men first came ashore at Point Valentine then moved along the coast to a more protected location they called Point Wild. Here Shackleton left most of the crew for over 3 months while he went in a smaller whaler to get help from a whaling station on South Georgia. From Point Wild we sailed around the coast to the most southerly point, Cape Lookout. We went zodiac cruising in extremely rough seas to visit Macaroni and Chinstrap penguins.
