Borneo is the 3rd largest island in the world and is just north of the equator. Borneo is divided into 3 separate countries: Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. We visited the Malaysian states of Sabah & Sarawak
Kota Kinabalu, capital of Sabah, is on the sultry South China Sea, great for snorkelling and visiting interesting markets selling a wide range of fish & tropical fruits. To appreciate local customs we had home-stays with Dusan & Kinabatangan villagers. We went inside burial caves built high into cliffs, travelled by long tailed boats along the Kinabatagan river, did a jungle trek to experience the jungles and at night slept on a wooden platform protected only by mosquito nets. We visited Sandakan, with its homes built on stilts in the sea then by speedboat to Turtle Island to watch Green Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. We returned to Kota Kinabalu to laze by the beach to watch glorious sunsets over the South China Sea.
