easter heyerdahl island kontiki moai nui rapa tsunami
Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is one of the most isolated islands in the world. It is believed that some 1200 years ago, Polynesian people settled and created a thriving culture. However, human activity and overpopulation led to extinction of natural resources, which caused the demise of he Rapa Nui civilization.
For reasons unknown they began carving giant statues out of the volcanic rock, many from the inland Rando Raraku quarry. Known as "Moai" they were placed at the sea edge facing inland. Good examples of Moai statues are Ahu Tonhariki, Ahu Vai Uri & Ahu Akiri. Other places to see: the freshwater lake in the Rano Raraku crater, Petroglyphs, Cabo Te Manga - Birdman cult islands. There's only 1 town: Hanya Roa. Rapa Nui airport's huge runway is best viewed on Google Earth, it was built by the US as an emergency landing for the space shuttle.
