Our jouney to Shimla in the hills of Hamachal Pradesh began with a ride on the Kalka Shimla Railway, the world Heritage listed 'toy train' that chugs along 96 kms of narrow gauge, through 102 tunnels and over 988 bridges as it climbs to reach the hill station of Shimla. In 1864 Shimla became the summer headquarters of the British government in India. The town is set among spectacular rolling hills and has great views across the Himalayas. We strolled along the Ridge to the Viceregal Lodge, where the partition agreement that separated India from Pakistan and Bangladesh was signed and visited the Himalayan Bird Park. Jakhu Hill Temple built on the highest point in Shimla is dedicated to Hanuman, the monkey god and overrun by spectacle thieving monkeys.
