Set at the confluence of the Beas and Suketi Khad Rivers, Mandi was established over 1500 years ago as a stop along the salt trading route between India and Tibet. Since the 600s A.D. dozens of stone Shiva temples have been built along the rivers and the town's narrow stone roads.. Mandi is a lively market town centered around a pretty sunken garden. We stayed at the heritage Raj Mahal Palace Hotel and enjoyed the company of Raja Ashkopal, 19th Raja of Mandi.
