Amritsar is in the Punjab, about 25 klms east of the Pakistan border. It's the centre of Sikhism and the site of the Harmandir Sahib, or Golden Temple, the chief pilgrimage destination for Sikhs living elsewhere in India and abroad. The giant pool of water that surrounds and reflects the Golden Temple is the Amrit Sarovar. A marble causeway from the edge of the pool goes to an island of the Golden Temple where the sacred Adi Granth scripture is recited out loud during the day.
Near to the Golden Temple complex is Jallianwalla Bagh, the site of the 1919 Amritsar massacre.
Wagah is a border town straddling the line between Pakistan and India and is the only crossing point between Pakistan and India that is regularly open to foreigners. There is daily flag raising and lowering ceremony at Wagah Border involving both the Indian and Pakistani border forces.
