Lanzhou, Gansu is on the Yellow River and has been a trading centre since early times. It's at the southern end of the Silk Road route through the Hexi Corridor.
Bingling Temple has Buddhist sculptures carved into natural caves and caverns in a canyon along the Yellow River about 100 km southeast of Lanzhou.
Labrang Monastery is home to the largest number of monks outside of Tibet. This Yellow Hat sect monastery is also renown for its Yak butter sculptures. The Labrang Monastery is located in the town of Xiahe, in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Xiahe is about 4 hours drive from Lanzhou.
Mogao Caves are 25 km southeast of Dunhuang. There are 735 caves at Mogao, many caves were covered with murals and contain Buddhist statues. The Dunhuang manuscripts were found here in a sealed-up cave.
The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves are in the Flaming Mountains' Mutou Valley, 30 km east of Turpan and were created between 400 and 1,300 AD. The grottoes that can be entered have a rectangular door that leads into rectangular room with arched ceilings.
