TThe Gannan Grasslands are in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwestern Gansu Province. The Grasslands cover an area of over 2.5 million ha. One of the ancient rural towns is Ganjia Bajiao village, about 40km southwest of Xiahe. This ancient town is surrounded by a wall that may date back to the Han Dynasty (over 2,000 years). Bajiao is very close to the Bon Tsewey Monastery.
Bon Tsewey Monastery includes Bon, an ancient Tibetan religion prior to Buddhism. The monastery was founded in the twelfth century but was destroyed during the cultural revolution, rebuilding started in 1982.
