Salvador was the first slave port in the Americas and the African influence of the slaves' descendants makes it a centre of Afro-Brazilian culture. It's best seen in Pelourinho where the narrow cobbled streets lined are with colourful houses that echo to the sounds of Olodum drum corps and religious parades. Churches such as the greja da Ordem Terceira do Carmo and São Francisco Church and Convent have interesting stories to tell & their opulent interiors are .... over the top. We also took the public ferry to Ilha de Itaparica, rode the public Elevador Lacerda to go to the lower city and took the bus to Forte de Santo Antonio.
