One of the four Imperial cities of Morocco, Meknes became a capital under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismaïl (1672–1727), He installed under the old city a large prison to house Christian sailors captured at sea, constructed numerous edifices, gardens, monumental gates, mosques and a 40 kilometre long high wall. His many building projects were made possible by the large number of European slaves with as much as 30 000 slaves working on his palace. Nowadays,it's souq is very busy, with one of its specialities being camel burgers for European tourists.
