On our journey from Quarzazate we travelled along the edge of the Draa Valley palm groves to Zagora in the south-east of Morocco. The city is named as it flanked on two sides by mountains. The original, iconic ‘Tombouctou, 52 jours’ sign featuring a nomad with a smirking camel is here and Zagora’s fame as a desert outpost remains. The Saadians launched their expedition to conquer Timbuktu from here in 1591. Tamegroute historically served as a hub of learning and religion. The recently funded mosque by the King is around the revered 16th century tomb of a Sufi saint, includes a merdersa (Islamic school) and the precious library of 4000 manuscripts. Tamegroute's glazed ceramics are also very well known.
