Essaouira keep
Leaving our Sahara camp, we went through areas producing Argan oil where we saw the tree climbing goats that eat the argan nuts. That night we stayed at Taroudant , a walled Berber market town in the heart of the beautiful Souss Valley. Next day we travelled up the Atlantic coast to Essaouira. A coastal wind – the beautifully named alizee, has allowed Essaouira to to retain its traditional culture and character. For most of the year, the wind blows so hard that relaxing on the beach is impossible .But come here in spring and autumn, it's perfect for wandering the spice-scented lanes and palm-lined avenues of the fortified medina, watch fishing nets being mended and traditional boats being constructed in the hugely atmospheric port.
