Kashgar (Kashi) is an oasis city & is the west most city in China. Its near the border with Kyrgyzstan, our next place to visit as we followed the Silk Road. Because of its former strategic location, it once had many embassy's but now for example, the former British Embassy is a chinese restaurant. Kashgar has many Bazaars that sell just about everything including silk & furs whilst the Sunday markets at Kaili attract farmers from around the region for trading farm animals, camels, fruit & vegetables etc. Kashgar's population are mainly Muslim Uyghurs so the city hase many historic mosques such as the id Kah mosque and the Abakh Khoja Tomb complex.
Kashgar is undergoing a building boom that will replace the old city will modern high rise apartments. We have photographed the old city to show its narrow streets suitable only for carts & bikes making it a safe playground for the Uyghur children. We also photographed the old city 's cottage industries & businesses, some still using coal for power.
