We crossed the the Amu-Darya (the Oxus) and into the Kizilcum Desert to see a string of kala’s (fortresses) that once stood guard over an oasis and a fertile plain that existed around the first millennium BCE that were stopping points along the ancient Silk Road. Toprak kala was a Khwārezmian walled city inhabited from about the 1st century bc until the 6th century ad. The capital of Khorezm was here in the 3rd century A.D. Numerous aggressive wars forced the people abandon the city. Our Yurt camp was between Ayaz Kala lake and Ayaz Qala 1, we explored the fort & stayed for sunset. From Ayaz Qala 1, there's good views of Ayaz Qala 2 and the Ayaz Palace ruins.
