Traveling around Lake Como by ferry allowed us to criss-cross the waters to visit Villa’s with notable gardens, the villages of Bellagio, Varenna and to experience Lake Como’s fabulous sunsets.
Villa Carlotta is in Tremezzo, built for the Milanese marquis Giorgio Clerici in 1690 with Italian garden with steps, fountains and sculptures extending over 17 acres. Among the statues, Mars and Venus by Luigi Acquisti is remarkable. In 1843, it was given as a wedding present by Princess Marianna of Prussia to her daughter Charlotte, Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen, after whom the villa is named.
Villa del Balbianello is at Lenno, located on the tip of a small wooded peninsula on the western shore of Lake Como and is famous for its elaborate terraced gardens. It was built in 1787 on the site of a Franciscan monastery for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. It changed ownership a number of times before it was bought in 1974 by the Italian explorer, Guido Monzino, who filled it with rich collections, including artifacts acquired on his expeditions. Monzino, who died in 1988, left the villa to the National Trust of Italy.
Bellagio has long been famous for its setting at the intersection of the three branches of the Y-shaped lake,situated at the tip of the peninsula separating the lake's two southern arms, some of its notable buildings include Chiesa di San Giacomo.
Varenna was founded by local fishermen in 769, today, some of its main sites are the castle Vezio, the churches San Giorgio, Santa Maria della Grazie and San Giovanni Battista, circa 1100's.
