Our hotel was near the Venezia Santa Lucia railway station so this walk starts at the Cannaregio Canal. Cross the canal on Ponte delle Guglie, turn left and enter a tunnel into the former gated Jewish Ghetto area, explore and return to the main street that heads to St Marks Square. At the Casino, cross the Grand Canal on a Traghetti (gondolier with 2 oarsmen) and go through the markets to the 11 century San Giacometto church. At a nearby bar, stop for an aperitivo before crossing the Grand Canal again by the Rialto Bridge. Arriving at at St Marks Square, we saw a 93,000 ton cruise ship, the Norwegian Jade , sail by. Around the square is St Marks Cathedral, its Campanile and Doges Palace. Arrive early evening to watch the sunset then take a public ferry from St Marks Square to Ferrovia and watch the nightlife along the Grand Canal.
