This starts as an early morning stroll from our hotel to St Marks Square for sunrise and returning by ferry along the Grand Canal to see Venetians starting a new day. After breakfast, taking a ferry outside Santa Lucia railway station to go to San Giorgio island via Venice cruise ship terminals & Fusina Canal.
On the island is San Giorgio Monastery, established in 982 by the Benedictine monk, Giovanni Morosini. The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by Palladio, began in 1566, The current bell tower designed by Somascan Benedict Buratti was added in 1791. Today, in front of the church is Heinz Mack's sculpture "The Sky over 9 Columns" whilst many of the islands buildings are used for exhibitions such as Tomaso Buzzi and Lizzy Manola Ethiopian photo exhibition. Inside the basilica are artworks such as Madonna Enthroned with Saints by Sebastiano Ricci, Last Supper and Gathering of Manna of Jacopo Tintoretto. The choir stalls, have bas-reliefs by Albert Van der Brulle . On the main altar stands a large bronze by Antonio Vassilacchi representing the Four Evangelists who support the world and God . The pipe organ built in 1750 by Pietro Nacchini was restored in 1887 by Pietro Bazzani .The St George statue from the roof was inside the Basilica being restored after being hit by lightning.
