Gubbio, located on the lower slopes of Mt. Ingino is an extremely ancient town, its mentioned in the famous Eugubine Tablets and in the past was the capital of Umbria. The town centre has steep winding alleyways, with mediaeval, Gothic and Renaissance buildings of gray limestone. Just outside the town is a Roman amphitheatre.The12th century Duomo (Cathedral) of Gubbio most striking feature is the rose-window in the facade flanked by symbols of the Evangelists: the eagle for St. John, the lion for St. Mark, the angel for St. Matthew and the ox for St. Luke. The high altar was a Roman sarcophagus and has the remains of St Giacomo and San Mariano. The most precious art piece is the wooden Christ over the altar.Oposite is the palace built by Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482), the Duke of Urbino, whose family ruled between 1480 and 1508.The funivia is a cage-like cable car that ascends over the pine forests of Mount Ingino to the Basilica of Sant 'Ubaldo. From here, there’s great views over Gubbio and the surrounding Umbrian countyside.
