fresco grafitti Herculaneum mosaic ruins station train UNESCO
The ancient town of Herculaneum was destroyed by the same eruption of Mt. Vesuvius (79 A.D.) that destroyed Pompeii. The difference is that while Pompeii was covered in ash, Herculaneum was covered in mud which better preserved the many buildings and mosaics. Herculaneum was a wealthier town than Pompeii, with more fine houses, and far more lavish use of colored marble cladding. The discovery in recent years of some 300 skeletons along the sea shore came as a surprise, as it had been assumed that the town had been evacuated. Herculaneum has UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
