Syros was the first of the Greek Cycadic islands visited in the Aegian Sea. Its main port & city is Ermoupoli, named after Hermes, here we explored the Church of The Assumption with its painting by El Greco (Dominikos Theotokopoulos), the Church of St Nicholas in front is a Lion on a war memorial, and port area. On the next hill by Ermoupoli is the the old town of Ano Syros with its Venetian emblem above an entrance archway, winding narrow streets and the St George Church. We stayed at Galissas to explore the southern Syros. Our walks include Galissas to St Stefanos Cave, Finikas to Vigliostasi & Cape Fokia to Azolimnos. Inside St Stefonos cave is the small Greek Orthodox St Stefonos church, it has a plaque with a Ship's crest of HS Krystallidis, an Hellenic Navy fast attack craft. We saw this class of ship moored at Posidonia, Finikis Bay. There must be an interesting story why the plaque is in the church. On Finikas to Cape Viglostasi walk we passed Angathopes Beach, Komito Beach, photographed Sea Daffodils (Pancratrum maritimum) a disguised Grass hopper, thistle flowers & a Swallowtail butterfly.
