Mount Kinabalu, Sabah is 4095m (13,435 feet) high is just north of the equator. Our climb to the top started in rain-forest jungle then we proceeded through differing climate zones 'til near the top, we are above tree line. It's a challenging climb, but we enjoyed the region's remarkable flora and fauna, especially the huge insectivorous plants, the fresh mountain air & stunning views. We stayed that night in a hut at the tree line. 3am we awoke to climb to the summit using torches & holding onto guide-ropes. The sunrise from the summit gave awe-inspiring views across the jungles of Borneo. We scrambled down the mountain to Poring Springs village at the base for a well deserved soak in their Japanese-style hot springs. In our walks around Poring Springs, we saw huge stands of bamboo, the Rafflesia (a parasitic flowering plant), one of the flowers was about 100 centimetres (39 in) in diameter and looked and smelt like rotting flesh. We came across wild Orang-utan and walked on tree canopy bridges.
