We arrived at the historic port of Aqaba by ferry and that evening, it seemed to be party time on Aqaba beach. Its a lovely town & the Mamluk Fort is well worth exploring. We left for a safari into the Wad Rum desert & to camp with the Bedouin. Its a beautiful desert with much to see including the “7 Pillars of Wisdom”, Lawrences Spring, Petroglyphs, Umm Fruth Rock Bridge, glorious sunsets and then to fall asleep watching an amazing star show. There's a narrow siq that leads to Petra opening up at the The Treasury. The siq leads into a valley of Royal Tombs, Great Temple, Nabataean houses & tombs, Temenos Gate, incredible mosaic floors. The climbs up to High Place of Sacrifice, and Al-Deir provides spectacular views of the surrounding desert. We managed to photograph Egyption Caper Flower, a Venomous Grasshopper, Painted Dragon, the Sinai Rose Finch and the Mourning Wheatear. On our way to float in the Dead Sea, we visited Shabak Crusader Castle, Dana Nature Reserve, saw Lots wife and then afterwards onto Mount Nebo which has views to the promised land. At Jerash are the well preserved Roman city ruins with Hadrian's Arch, Hippodrome, Forum, many temples, couple of Roman theatres, churches & Cathedrals, Cardo Maximus etc. Madaba has incredible Byzantine-era mosaics. For example at St Georges Church is the ancient mosaic floor map showing the River Jordan, Dead Sea & Jerusalem. Other Mosaic floors are at the Archaeological Park & the Church of the Apostles. Amman is the modern capital city of Jordan with well preserved Roman Theatre and at the Citadel the Roman Ruins includes a colossal statue, Colonnaded Street, Umayyad Palace, Umayyad Mosque whilst the National Archaeological Museum with many well displayed exhibits. We had to fly to Instanbul, by-passing Syria, because the unrest just started.
