Lucca is a medieval town enclosed by impressive rampart walls designed by Leonardo da Vinci. It's history dates back to pre-Roman times. The narrow winding streets follow the old Roman grid design, they are interesting to meander through. Our photo-tour begins in Piazza dell'Amfiteatro, built in the original Roman amphitheatre, some Roman remains are still visible along via dell'Anfiteatro. Around the town we see the Basilica of San Frediana and the Church of San Michele, watch a medieval parade, visit a chocolate shop and spot a tartan mini car. We climbed the old clock tower Torre dell Ore, and the Guinigi Tower with roof top garden. Both towers gave excellent views over the town and surrounding countryside. At Porta San Gervasio, an old Roman gateway we passed through the inner circuit of medievil city walls and walked along Via del Fosso, named for the canal built in 1376, in defense of the eastern part of the city and follows the route of the medieval walls. Here we drank from a fountain built originally to provide water from Nottoloni's aquaduct of Guamo. Lucca Botanic Gardens has an interesting range of plants, a small lake and even an Australian Wollami pine. We went for a cycle around the city walls and then along the River Serchio as far as Ponto San Pietro. Lucca is the birth place of Giacomo Puccini. We were fortunate to attend two Puccini opera recitals, the first in the Church of San Giovanni where Puccini was baptised and later performed as organist. The second concert in was in Chiesa dei Servi, the Great Opera Gala for Santa Croce with the Lucca Philharmonic Orchestra, the G. Verdi choir of Prato and international soloists. It was the grand finale for the Puccini international Festival and a great way to end our visit to Lucca.
