Samarkand was the central position on the Silk Road between China and the West and was an Islamic centre for scholarly study. In the 14th century it was capital of the Timur (Tamerlane) empire and the site of his mausoleum (the Gur-e Amir). The Registan was the ancient center of the city and today is one of the best examples of restored Islamic architecture. The Registan consists of three separate buildings: Madrasa of Ulugh Beg (1417–1420,) Sher-Dor Madrasah (Lions Gate) (1619–1635/36)and Tilla-Kori Madrasah (1647–1659/60). Other notable sites in Samarkand include: The Bibi-Khanym Mosque (a modern replica), Siyob Bazaar, the largest bazaar in Samarkand & sells all daily necessities, such as "Samarkand naan". The Bazaar is next to Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Gur-e Amir Mausoleum (1404), Shah-i-Zinda necropolis. The Observatory of Ulugh Beg (Gurkani Zij ) for astronomers was built in 1428. One focus was the study of trigonometric functions necessary for astronomical observations. After his assassination, the observatory was destroyed.
