11. listopadu 1918 v 11 h vešlo v platnost příměří, které ukončilo boje první světové války. V Hrádku nad Nisou jsme si toto výročí připomněli na pěti místech: u pomníku Obětem válek ve Školní ulici, u pomníku padlým v první světové válce na hrádeckém hřbitově, u pamětní desky legionáře Josefa Novotného umístěné u vchodu do ZŠ T. G. Masaryka, na václavickém hřbitově a v Oldřichově, kde byl před 14 dny vysazen strom Svobody, který je zároveň věnován památce Tomáše Procházky, zastřeleného v říjnu v Afghánistánu.
Stovky mrtvých na bojištích první světové války pocházely i z Hrádku nad Nisou. V roce 1932 byl zřízen pomník v dnešní Školní ulici, který v původní podobě uváděl na deskách jména 253 obětí bez rozdílu národnosti. Pomník ve Václavicích se dokonce dochoval v původní podobě. Dodnes na něm najdeme jména 54 lidí, kteří se z války domů nevrátili.
