A place where Italy was built, the scene of a fierce battle between the French and Austrian armies, on June 24, 1859. The thousands who died of this carnage were hastily buried in mass graves in the battlefields. Corpses sometimes covered by a so small layer of earth that occasionally began to reappear from the ground shortly after the burial. Then residents think of collect the poor remains of these martyrs and giving them more dignified burial in a common ossuary, where those who were enemies in life, found brotherhood in the afterlife, as a marble plaque underlines at the entrance to the church. In 1869 the excavation works were started thanks to the interest of Count Luigi Torelli, senator of the newly established Kingdom of Italy, and in June 1870 the structure was apened as we can still see today, and where we can meditate on the value of our flags and our colors, which divide us on this earth, but they cannot distance us from our common destiny, outside this planet.
