Trináste storočie bolo bohaté na stavanie hradov. V tomto storočí vznikol aj hrad Oponice. Hrad plnil funkciu strážneho hradu na ochranu Nitry a okolia pred nájazdmi Tatárov. Tatárom síce odolal, ale husitské vojská ho dobyli v roku 1430, pričom ho značne poškodili. Do dnešnej doby sa zachovala značne rozsiahla časť obvodových múrov. Z nej je najzachovalejšia západná časť, ktorá mohutne čnie nad ostatné pozostatky. Napriek stavu zodpovedajúcemu zrúcanine hradu, o ktorý sa vyše 300 rokov nikto nezaujímal, nenáročný výstup všetkým odporúčam. Tradíciou sa stáva podujatie, na ktorom môžete ochutnať rôzne jedlá podľa starých receptov, uvidíte súboje rytierov, či kumánskych a iných bojovníkov. Ukážky sokoliarov upútajú určite každé, nielen detské oko. Výstup na hrad zvládnu aj deti a určite sa oplatí vidieť hrad vstávajúci z popola a výhľady z neho.
