Historie biocentra Obora sahá do r.1995, kdy byl vypracován revitalizační projekt, který si kladl za cíl vybudovat lokální mokřadní biocentrum. Vodní nádrž vznikla vytěžením štěrkopísku, nemá povrchový přítok ani odtok vody, objem dotován pouze nátokem spodní vody. Je rozdělena dřevěnou lávkou na část rekreační a ekologickou. Terénní úpravy břehů, vysázení různých druhově původních dřevin a vytvoření tůní poskytuje podmínky mnohým, někdy velmi vzácným, živočichům a rostlinám. Obora je majetkem města Smiřice a pro pohyb v ní jsou stanovena přesná pravidla. Přírodovědný kroužek ANAX při smiřické ZŠ má v budově na břehu nádrže klubovnu a provádí na Oboře svá pozorování.<br>
