Se stavbou kostela se začalo mezi lety 1333 a 1336. Jedná se o první kamenný kostel v Kutné Hoře. Je duchovním středem města a i v současnosti funguje jako centrum místní farnosti. Kostel měl mít původně 2 věže, ale už v době dokončování stavby se zřejmě ze statických důvodu od druhé věže upustilo. Vysoká věž se už od 15. stol. rozestupovala, při zvonění na velké zvony se kývala, několikrát do ní uhodil blesk a musela být opravována. Nyní se viditelně naklání k severozápadu, příčinou jsou terénní posuny na hraně údolí říčky Vrchlice.<br>
