Difference Between Expository And Persuasive Writing

The purpose of this essay is to give the differences and similarities between two forms of essays, persuasive essays and expository essays. Persuasive writing attempts to change a reader's feelings or beliefs on a particular subject by presenting valid reasons, examples and evidence. The author persuades readers through logical thinking about the issues they present in their argumentative papers. Expository writing is used to share knowledge and ideas with an audience in order to clarify, inform or explain something as thoroughly as possible-such as topics including historical events or abstract ideas that may be hard for others to understand. In expository writing, the main goal is not to influence its write my essay; rather it seeks only to inform them.

The organization and structure of these two types of papers are also very different. Although every essay has a thesis statement, it is not always the main idea or even a complete sentence. In persuasive essays, the thesis is usually an argument stating that the author's view on the topic is correct compared to what others believe about it (Murphy & Mitchell 468). Thesis statements in persuasive writing are more objectionable than those found in expository essays because they require thought provoking words and phrases such as "why" or "how" which will solicit strong reactions from readers (Klotter 119). These kinds of questions can influence a reader's beliefs without leaving room for any open interpretation by simply trying to prove that your opinion is right while someone else's is wrong.

Persuasive essays contain more direct first-person statements, as opposed to expository writing which usually portrays a third person view of the subject matter (Klotter 121). In persuasive papers, writers often make use of emotion and bias in order to fully persuade their audience that they are correct (Klotter 122). For instance, if you were writing an argumentative paper about global warming and had strong beliefs against it, like many other people do today, you would likely incorporate those feelings into your essay by stating them directly. By doing so you open up the opportunity for others to respond in kind with negative reactions or debates surrounding the issue because of your biased opinion directed at them directly. Comparatively, expository writing is more neutral, uses less personal statements and focuses on educating the reader about a subject matter rather than influencing them to agree or disagree with what the author has to say. In expository papers, writers provide facts and examples in order to further explain how they relate to one another.
