Das Hotel Hessenland wurde 1951 von Paul Bode, dem Bruder des documenta-Gründers Arnold Bode, für das innerstädtische Ruinengrundstück neben dem Hugenottenhaus entworfen. Hinter der schmucklos-grauen Fassade verbirgt sich ein denkmalgeschütztes Beispiel für die 1950er-Jahre-Architektur mit eleganter Lobby samt geschwungener Treppe und einem Ballsaal, der zu seinen Hochzeiten rund 800 Menschen Platz bot.<br><br>Der Saal wird schon seit den 1990er Jahren nicht mehr genutzt, das Hotel (samt einem original eingerichteten 50er-Jahre-Zimmer) stand rund ein Jahr leer, bis die documenta fifteen es zu neuem Leben erweckte: als Gästehaus für die Künstler*innen, der Ballsaal als Ausstellungsort für <a target="_blank" MADEYOULOOKhref="https://documenta-fifteen.de/lumbung-member-kuenstlerinnen/madeyoulook/">MADEYOULOOK</a> – eine interdisziplinäre Kooperation aus Johannesburg in Südafrika.
